What We Have Done: Greener Gainsborough's Journey

At Greener Gainsborough, we are dedicated to enhancing the green spaces in our community and fostering a connection with nature among our residents. Here’s a look at some of the key initiatives and projects we've undertaken recently:

1. Beautifying Ashcroft Green and Hastings Centre We proudly supplied over 400 daffodil bulbs for Ashcroft Green and additional bulbs to Hastings Centre on North Warren Road. These efforts are part of our ongoing commitment to brighten our community spaces with vibrant blooms.

2. Collaborative Meetings for Green Spaces We've held several meetings with West Lindsey District Council (WLDC), The Wildlife Trust, and other organizations to discuss the future of green spaces in Gainsborough. These discussions are crucial in shaping a greener, more sustainable environment for our town.

3. LEAP Community Hub Project To engage the community in gardening, we supplied the LEAP Community Hub with sunflower seeds, compost, and pots. This project not only beautifies our surroundings but also brings people together through the joy of growing plants.

4. Supporting Gainsborough Men’s Shed We've supported the development of Gainsborough Men’s Shed, a group that has become a key partner in our projects. In return, they are providing us with raised beds, planters, bird boxes, and other essential items for future initiatives.

5. Tulip Planting at Gainsborough Library In Autumn 2023, with the help of volunteers from the Disability Social Network, Stepping Stone Theatre for Mental Health, and Gainsborough Men’s Shed, we planted over 800 tulip bulbs at Gainsborough Library. This collaborative effort will result in a stunning spring display for the enjoyment of local residents.

6. Woodland Outdoor Learning at Aegir School We assisted Cllr Jimmy Snee on the "The Woodland Outdoor Learning" project at Aegir School. By clearing the wooded area, we helped make way for an outdoor classroom, enhancing the learning environment with a touch of nature.

7. Gainsborough in Bloom and Biodiversity Efforts Our team supported Gainsborough in Bloom by planting wildflower seeds at Morton Corner and participating in the largest volunteer turnout for planting planters around town. Additionally, we assisted in a biodiversity survey at Thorndike Way, contributing to the preservation and understanding of local ecosystems.

8. Community Engagement and Events We joined other local community groups at events such as Connexions Fun Day, Morton Feastival, and the Shine Cup in June and July 2024. These events allowed us to connect with residents, share our mission, and distribute information leaflets.

9. Future Plans: Community Allotment and Biodiversity Corridor We are in the planning stages for a community allotment at Foxby Lane Allotments, which will provide space for residents to grow their own produce. Additionally, we had the initial vision for a ‘Biodiversity/Wildlife Corridor,’ a project now being led by ‘Together CIO’ with our continued support, aiming for National Lottery funding.

Each of these projects reflects our commitment to making Gainsborough a greener, more beautiful place to live. We look forward to continuing our work and involving more members of our community in these efforts. Together, we can create a thriving, sustainable environment for all.
